Personal Note From Criminal Defense Lawyer James Newby

Aug 5, 2015 | Criminal Defense

May I get personal for a moment? This post shares my personal perspective on being a criminal defense lawyer in Colorado Springs.

When you are looking for a criminal defense lawyer, particularly domestic violence or a DUI attorney, make sure that that your lawyer cares about you personally.

Let me tell you as one who has practiced both prosecution and criminal defense, to be truly a good lawyer in the area of criminal defense, you need to care about the people you represent. There is no doubt that it is much more difficult to represent someone you care about.

Your Problems Are My Problems

When I have a client, their problems become my problems and their stress becomes my stress. It’s not easy taking on the problems of people you hardly know. However, this is the profession I have chosen and I would not change it at all. When I represent someone they become my friend. I treat your case the same as if it was my case.

As a criminal defense lawyer in Colorado Springs, I see all kinds of criminal charges. The most common types of cases involve disputes between family members and friends. One of the hardest parts of my chosen field is to see the effect that decisions have on good people.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, most of my clients are good people who make bad choices.

Over the years, a common theme has arisen. Almost without exception, the legal problems that my clients get themselves into involve one of three things – anger, alcohol, or drugs.

Anger & Criminal Violence

Anger is the most common cause of crimes of violence. Most domestic violence cases stem from an uncontrolled temper. A lot of people sit in my office and when calm, cannot understand how they ended up in the situation they find themselves.

However, if they look deep inside themselves they will recognize a weakness in controlling their temper. It should be each person’s sincere and deepest desire to overcome such a weakness. Anger will destroy every area of a person’s life and will build nothing.

Alcohol And Crime

Alcohol accounts for a lot of crime in Colorado Springs.  Of course, there are many crimes committed without it, but in many, many criminal situations, it is present.

Alcohol abuse is a plague of epic proportions in the Colorado Springs area. It is not possible to calculate the damage caused by individuals under the influence. When people visit with me many cannot even remember what they did while intoxicated.

The worst part is how addictive alcohol true can be to those under its power. When combined with anger, it can cause even more damage and leave in its wake death and destruction.

Drugs And Addiction

Drugs are downright scary. A person under the iron grip of addiction will do things that they never thought possible. Honest people become dishonest. The kind person becomes deceptive and mean. The motto becomes whatever it takes to fill the addiction. While not as common as anger and alcohol, a large part of the Colorado Springs criminal justice system is utilized fighting the war on drugs.

Families Teaching Children

What is needed to fix the problem are families teaching children about the dangers of juvenile alcohol and drug abuse. Parents demonstrating and teaching the younger generation what it means to exercise self-control and to avoid anger.

A wise person said that one of the reasons youth fail is that there are poor teaching and the modeling of behavior at home. My personal hope is that parents will love their children and teach them. The most effective teaching method is by example. I recognize that many come from broken or less than ideal homes. We should all know that a good home can start with us.

Competent And Knowledgeable About Colorado Criminal Law

When a person looks to hire a Colorado Springs criminal defense lawyer, they want someone who is competent and knowledgeable about Colorado criminal law. They want someone who knows their way around the local city and county courtrooms.

Trial skills are a must if you want proper representation. If the District Attorney knows that you may go to trial, it is easier to negotiate and get what you want.  Just as important as being good at one’s craft is caring about the people one serves.

The Need To Do All I Can For You

Being a criminal defense lawyer in Colorado Springs is a very satisfying career. I represent all types of crimes. My hope is that I will make a difference and that I can help others.

I have spoken to lawyers who over the years understand that caring about a client can be very difficult. It means there is pressure. There is a desire to help, which at times can be very difficult because that person’s actions have made it almost impossible to help.

My hope is that people in Colorado Springs who hire me to represent them understand that I care about them as a person. I want them to be happy, to live their life in such a way as to avoid future problems. I want to do all within my power to make sure they know that I did all I could for them.

If you have been charged with a crime in Colorado Springs, I am here to help. I can not promise you that your problems will go away, but we will work through them together.

Sincerely,

James Newby
